Episode #097 – Halloween Cocktails

It’s the SPOOKIEST time of the year—and we’re throwing parties! Classing it up a bit can be a bit of a task, but we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeve.

Pumpkin Spice Boilermaker

  • 1 bottle of Southern Tier Warlock
  • 2 oz of Homemade Cinnamon Whiskey*

Drink together or separately. Have instead of a Pumpkin Spice Latte.

Recipe: Homemade Cinnamon Whiskey

We talk about it homemade things in a previous episode (Episode #072 – Homemade Liqueurs and Cocktails to Make with Them) but it’s re-posted here because it’s such a great fall flavor:


  • 1 (750 ml) bottle inexpensive whiskey
  • 8 Cinnamon sticks
  • 3 oz Simple syrup
  • 6 Whole dried red chile peppers (optional)


Empty the bottle of whiskey into a large container with a lid. Add the cinnamon sticks and simple syrup and seal. Shake the container and let stand for five days, shaking daily.

After five days, add the dried chile peppers to the container, if desired, and shake. Let stand for three to four more days, tasting after the first day to test the flavor intensity. When the flavor reaches the desired intensity, strain and rebottle.

For the whiskey, use something that’s already got some hefty spice, like Wild Turkey 101.

For the simple syrup, a nice-and-easy 1: 1 ratio of sugar : water will work.

Orange Monster Mash

  • ¼ oz white rum
  • ¼ oz vodka
  • ¼ oz tequila
  • ¼ oz brandy
  • ½ oz Aperol
  • ¼ oz Triple Sec
  • 4-5 oz homemade orange soda (recipe below)

If ya real freaky, add 1-2 oz of cream and dry shake everything but the soda water before combining in a glass with ice.

Homemade Orange Soda

  • 4-6 oranges, juiced to make 2 cups
  • Zest from 4 oranges
  • Zest from 1 lime
  • ½ cup honey

Combine ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat for several minutes, then chill and strain into a tempered glass container and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Combine with 1:3 parts orange syrup:soda water.

Rising of the Dead (from Imbibe Magazine)

  • 2 oz. serrano and jalapeno-infused tequila
  • 1 oz. pineapple juice
  • ½ oz. fresh lime juice
  • ¾ oz. agave syrup
  • 2 basil leaves
  • 2 chile de arbol dried peppers

Smack the basil and add to a shaker; add the remaining ingredients. Add ice and shake vigorously. Double strain over fresh ice into a double rocks glass. Garnish.

Serrano and Jalapeno Tequila

1 bottle Corralejo blanco tequila
1 whole jalapeno pepper (remove stem, quarter lengthwise)
1 serrano pepper (remove stem, quarter lengthwise)

Add the jalapeno and serrano to a bottle of tequila. Infuse for a minimum 24 hours to 72 hours. Strain out the solids and pour the tequila back into a new bottle.


IT’S MY OPINION: But there’s only one truly great Halloween song, and that’s “Monster Mash.” Play it again and again and again.
